Lost & Beloved:  Evidence for Communication

Can communicating with the dead really be demonstrated? After the loss of a loved one, are afterlife encounters real, or simply wishful figments of our imaginations?

Most people know the pain of bereavement: dealing with grief and loss of a parent, sibling, or child, even loss of a pet.  Philosophies of what happened to lost loved ones essentially fall into two camps:  Either some aspect of us continues on, or it doesn't.  If it does, the question then becomes whether any form of communication is possible between the physical realm and one or more nonphysical ones (often referred to as a spiritual realm, a term not used here as it implies certain assumptions).

Historically, individuals practicing mediumship and channeling have purported to facilitate such communication.  Distilling truth from these practices is problematic at best, not least because of substantial incidence of intentional fraud and deceptive techniques.  Yet, through technology and investigative accounts, there exists tangible and statistically significant evidence of genuine phenomena we don't understand.  This can manifest as apparent communication, whether auditory, visual, experiential, or other physical phenomena.  Such manifestations typically fall under the following classifications:

  • After-Death Communications (ADCs):  A catch-all category of mainly spontaneous communications received through the physical senses, physical and/or psi phenomena, or other means
  • Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) / Instrumental Transcommunication (ITC):  Auditory, visual, or other anomalous information content (sometimes called simply electronic voices) having no readily explainable physical origin, typically captured using electronic recording equipment
  • Psychic Mediumship:  Information transmitted through mediums, i.e. a human intermediary

  • Dream Analysis:  Ordinary or lucid dreaming, usually of a passed loved one or dreams of past lives, of a singular quality (often felt to be a visit) or containing information later verified to be prescient/accurate
  • Miscellaneous 'Spirit Communication':  Another catch-all category of techniques used to initiate communication with ostensibly deceased entities, including astral projection ("out of body" experiences or OBEs), "talking boards" (e.g. ouija boards), automatic writing
  • 'Close Encounter' Accounts:  The most extreme cases where deceased individuals are reported to contact the living through phone calls, messages on computers, or even directly appear and communicate in the physical

The grief and suffering people bear and have to go through is a part of their inner self.  Some of it is through their own action, or initiated by higher forces in order to activate the learning process that leads to recognition, improvement,
and perfection
